BA (Hons) - Research project

Honours research thesis

The purpose of my honours thesis was to explore, observe and highlight the elements and aesthetics of the uncanny in a spatial context, while analysing abandoned and non-programmatic spaces in particular. Ultimately, it was to be emphasised that they should not been seen as spaces of contempt, rather, as spaces for the imagination, freedom of use, and spaces for the uncanny to be evoked and explored.

My interest in the uncanny grew from my travels, where I would come across and explore abandoned spaces, which had been left for decay and nature to dissolve. Among my travels, Berlin proved to be a favoured place for uncanny, disused spaces due to its post-industrial condition. For the research purpose of my thesis, I spent two months living in Berlin exploring and placing myself within these unfamiliar sites to capture the authenticity of these desolate yet authentic spaces, spaces that evoke the uncanny.
