Container Hostel - Dock Inn
Located by the local harbour and shipyard near the town centre of Warnemünde, Germany’s first up-cycling hostel was created by the team at Kinzo and Holzer Kobler Architekturen. The large scale hostel project was built entirely from recycled shipping containers and accommodates 64 rooms with a total of 188 beds in four different types of containers, as well as an open restaurant, communal areas, a gallery and a spa.
My role in the project was to assist the team with the concept and planning of the ‘common room’, which is located on the ground floor of the hostel and reflects the overall nautical concept of the hostel. I developed a gymnasium inspired seating area that encourages interaction among the hostel guests, designed the spatial layout of the area, and worked on the material and furniture selections. In addition I provided assistance with the reception / lounge design, CAD drawings, site analysis, wall features, and mood / material boards.
