University BA (Hons) design project
The focus of my honours degree project and supportive thesis was the exploration of the uncanny. Students were given a specific space within a different borough of London and required to develop a concept around the area and it's history. The brief I had been given was a space in Notting Hill, which has rich cultural and musical roots, therefore I wanted to develop a social and cultural space for music and interaction.
The uncanny and music share great similarities, in a sense that they both evoke nostalgia, so I created a space that united the two. The architectural highlight for this project was the fractured origami inspired, acoustic ceiling that casts moving shadows throughout the day; evoking unfamiliarity, the essence of the uncanny.
The functionality of the space was divided between a record exchange and an area for live sets and group discussions for people to gather and discuss topics such as music, culture and community.
The intent of the "broken" ceiling was to give the user the feeling that they were inside an abandoned building, where the uncanny often lies. For this project I paired the topic of the uncanny with a supportive thesis and spent several months living in Berlin, exploring the city's abandoned and disused spaces for research purposes.
